Jane Desmond has been appointed as this year’s Resident Faculty Associate at the UIUC Center of Advanced Studies, where she is leading the current campus-wide initiative: Knowing Animals: Histories, Strategies, and Futures in Human-Animal Relations. This project aims to galvanize the campus around the emergent academic community of “animal studies,” and features a series of visiting lectures and a graduate seminar in human-animal relations this spring. For more information on this initiative and profiles of guest speakers, ranging from genomics to shifting dimensions of animal law, please see the Center for Advanced Study website. A faculty advisory group from across the campus brings together scholars in law, liberal arts, fine arts, the veterinary school, and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, to study the role that animals play in human societies. Among that group is Anthropology Professor and leading primatologist, Dr. Paul Garber.
