R. J. Ellis is the Chair of American and Canadian Studies Department at the University of Birmingham
in the UK and a Fellow of the English Academy. His main research areas are the Beats’
writing and cultures and nineteenth century women’s, African American and African American
women’s writing, but he often roams more widely. He founded the journal Comparative American
Studies and edited it with Paul Giles for the first six years of its existence.
